The microvilli that constitute the brush border have enzymes for this final part of digestion anchored into their apical plasma membrane as integral membrane proteins. They are known to secrete large amounts of protein-rich material and are thought to secrete the enzyme peptidase, which breaks peptide molecules into amino acids suitable for assimilation by the body.
