(d) Widal test is used for the diagnosis of typhoid. It is an agglutination test for the presence of antibodies against the Salmonella organisms, which cause typhoid fever. Salmonella typhimurium is a pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria predominately found in the intestinal lumen. Its toxicity is due to an outer membrane consisting largely of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) which protect the bacteria from the environment.
