Electrochemistry Ques 14

14. How many grams of cobalt metal will be deposited when a solution of cobalt (II) chloride is electrolyzed with a current of 10 amperes for 109 minutes $(1$ Faraday $=96,500 C$; Atomic mass of $Co=59 u)$

[NEET Kar: 2013]

(a) 0.66

(b) 4.0

(c) 20.0

(d) 40.0

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (c) Applying,

$w=$ Zit $=\frac{\text{ Eit }}{96500}$

Equivalent weight of cobalt (II) $=59 / 2$

$I=10 A$

Time $(t)=109 min=109 \times 60 sec$

Substituting these values we get,

$ w=\frac{59 \times 10 \times 109 \times 60}{2 \times 96500}=20.0 $
