Equilibrium Ques 35

35. Which of the following salts will give highest $pH$ in water?

[2014]

(a) $KCl$

(b) $NaCl$

(c) $Na_2 CO_3$

(d) $CuSO_4$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (c) $Na_2 CO_3$ is a salt of strong base $(NaOH)$ and weak acid $(H_2 CO_3)$. On hydrolysis this salt will produce strongly basic solution. i.e. $pH$ will be highest $(pH>7)$ for this sotluion. Others are combination of $KCl=$ Strong acid + Strong base

$arrow$ neutral solution $(pH \approx 7)$

$NaCl=$ Strong acid + Strong base

$arrow$ neutral solution $(pH \approx 7)$

$CuSO_4=$ Strong acid + wake base

$arrow$ Acidic solution $(pH<7$ )
