Structure Of Atom Ques 6

6. The energy of second Bohr orbit of the hydrogen atom is $-328 kJ mol^{-1}$; hence the energy of fourth Bohr orbit would be:

[2005]

(a) $-41 kJ mol^{-1}$

(b) $-82 kJ mol^{-1}$

(c) $-164 kJ mol^{-1}$

(d) $-1312 kJ mol^{-1}$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (b) $E_n=E_1 \times(\frac{Z}{n})^{2}$

$E_2=\frac{E_1}{2^{2}}=-328 kJ / mol$

$E_4=\frac{E_1}{4^{2}}$

$\Rightarrow \frac{E_4}{E_2}=\frac{4}{16}=\frac{1}{4}$

$\Rightarrow E_4=\frac{E_2}{2}=\frac{-328}{4} kJ / mol=-82 kJ / mol$
