The P Block Elements Ques 38

38. Acidity of diprotic acids in aqueous solutions increases in the order :

(a) $H_2 S<H_2 Se<H_2 Te$

[2014]

(b) $H_2 Se<2 H_2 S<H_2^{2} Te$

(c) $H_2 Te<H_2 S<H_2 Se$

(d) $H_2 Se<H_2 Te<H_2 S$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (a) The weakning of $M-H$ bond with increase in size of $M$ (where $M=S, Se, Te$ ) explains the acid character of hydrides.

On moving down the group, atomic size increases hence, bond length increases and hence, removal tendency of $H$ also increases.
