The P Block Elements Ques 52

52. Which would quickly absorb oxygen?

[1991, 92]

(a) Alkaline solution of pyrogallol

(b) Conc. $H_2 SO_4$

(c) Lime water

(d) Alkaline solution of $CuSO_4$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. (a) Upon oxidation, pyrogallol forms hydroxyquinone and many other higher molecular mass products.

Hydroxy groups are strong activators of aromatic systems, hence pyrogallol is reactive enough to react with oxygen in air.

57 .

(c) Oleum is $H_2 S_2 O_7(H_2 SO_4+SO_3)$ which is obtained by dissolving $SO_3$ in $H_2 SO_4$ and is called fuming sulphuric acid.
