Oscillations Ques 28

28. There is a body having mass $m$ and performing S.H.M. with amplitude $a$. There is a restoring force $F=-k x$. The total energy of body depends upon

[2001]

(a) $k, x$

(b) $k, a$

(c) $k, a, x$

(d) $k, a, v$

Answer:

Correct Answer: 28.(b)

Solution:

  1. (b) Total Energy of body performing simple harmonic motion $=\frac{1}{2} m \omega^{2} a^{2}=\frac{1}{2} ka^{2}$

where $k=m \omega^{2}$

$ T . E .=K . E .+P . E .=\frac{1}{2} m(a^{2}-x^{2}) \omega^{2}+\frac{1}{2} m \omega^{2} x^{2} $

Hence energy depends upon amplitude and $k$ (spring constant).
