Cell Structure And Function Cell The Unit Of Life 3

Lysosome:

  • Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles found in animal cells.
  • They contain enzymes responsible for breaking down cellular waste and debris.
  • Lysosomes play a crucial role in cellular digestion and recycling of biomolecules.

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER):

  • The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranes found in eukaryotic cells.
  • There are two types: Rough ER, with ribosomes attached, involved in protein synthesis and processing; and Smooth ER, involved in lipid synthesis and detoxification.

Golgi Apparatus (Golgi Body):

  • The Golgi apparatus is responsible for modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids produced in the endoplasmic reticulum.
  • It consists of flattened membranous sacs called cisternae.

Nucleus:

  • The nucleus is a membrane-bound organelle found in eukaryotic cells.
  • It contains the genetic material (DNA) and is the control center of the cell, regulating gene expression and cell activities.
  • The nucleolus within the nucleus is involved in ribosome production.

Heterochromatin:

  • Heterochromatin is a tightly packed form of chromatin (DNA and associated proteins) within the cell nucleus.
  • It is characterized by condensed and inactive DNA, typically associated with genes that are not actively transcribed.
