Pyq- Thermal Properties Of Microscopic & Macroscopic
Question: The ratio of the coefficient of thermal expansion of a metal to that of a liquid is 7:2. The ratio of their specific heats at constant volume is 5:3. Find the ratio of their specific heats at constant pressure.
Answer: 3:2
Explanation:
According to Mayer’s law,
Cp - Cv = R
where, R is the ideal gas constant
Given, Cp/Cv for metal = 3/2
Cp/Cv for liquid ≈ 1.0
Substituting in Mayer’s relation, we get
7/2 - Cv = (f/2)R
5/3 - Cv = R/γ
On subtracting, we obtain
*(7/2 - 5/3)nR = Cv
Cv = 3R/2
Now, the ratio of specific heats at constant pressure for metal to liquid is
*(Cp + R)/Cv = (7/2 + R)/(3R/8)
