1. Technical Overview

“Special Coach” is an umbrella term for all non-conventional passenger-carrying or utility stock built for a specific traffic, security, medical, religious or tourism purpose. They are detached from regular rake composition and are maintained either by ICF/Chennai, RCF/Kapurthala, RWF/Yelahanka, BEML, BHEL, RDSO-approved private firms or by zonal workshops (Ajmer, Kharagpur, Jhansi, etc.).

Key design differentiators over normal LHB/ICF coaches

  • Shell: Special-grade Corten steel, 30 % higher weld strength, monocoque stainless-steel roof in luxury variants.
  • Bogies:
    • High-speed (160 km/h) – “LHB-FIAT” (IRHS) with disc brakes & CBC.
    • Heritage/religious – Cast-steel UIC bogies with speed restriction 110 km/h.
  • Coupler: AAR H-type tight-lock (CBC) mandatory since 2014 even for heritage stock.
  • Electrical: 3-phase 750 V/110 V converters, 25 kV OHE through Roof Mounted Equipment (RME).
  • HVAC: Roof Package Unit (RPU) 17.5 TR for saloon, 7 TR for inspection cars; split-AC for metre-gauge hill coaches.
  • Fire & Safety: DSPA aerosol suppression, 2 % cobalt in seat foam for fire retardancy, photo-electric smoke sensors networked with SL-90 relay.
  • Weight: Lightest special coach – Self-Propelled Tourist Coach (SPTC) 34 t; heaviest – Saloon 57 t.

  • 1854: First “Inspection Carriage” built by East Indian Rly at Howrah for Lord Dalhousie—wooden body, 4-wheel, tallow lamp lighting.
  • 1875: “Hospital Train” ran during famine in Madras Presidency—converted I-class coaches fitted with 20 beds.
  • 1907: “Viceregal Saloon” introduced with electric fans powered by axle-driven dynamo.
  • 1947: Post-partition military specials moved 3.5 lakh troops in 120 days—largest troop rail movement till date.
  • 1982: Palace on Wheels flagged off by RTDC & WR—first luxury tourist train of Asia.
  • 1995: First A/C Three-Tier Special (Garib Rath) announced in Railway Budget; later converted to regular service.
  • 2014: LHB-based “Vistadome” conceptualised by RDSO on Golden Chariot specs.
  • 2021: “Hospital Train 2.0” with 7 COVID-care coaches attached to WR’s “Kavach” train—first use of UV-C steriliser in Indian coaches.
  • 2023 Dec: 12 new Tejas-Rajani hybrid tourist specials sanctioned in Budget—self-propelled, 200 km/h, hydrogen-ready.

  • New sanction 2024-25:
    • 30 Tejas Vistadome for Arunachal & Kashmir circuits.
    • 10 “Bharat Gaurav” theme-based specials for Ramayana, Gandhi, Veer Shaheed circuits.
