${NaBH} _4$ in the reaction is used for the reduction by addition of a hydride ion and a proton. Carbon-oxygen double bonds are easily reduced by sodium borohydride. The actual reducing agent in these reductions is hydride ion $({H}^{-})$. Hydride ion adds to the carbonyl carbon and the alkoxide ion that is formed is subsequently protonated by water. In other words, the carbonyl group is reduced by adding an ${H}^{-}$ followed by an ${H}^{+}$. The mechanism of the given reaction is as follows:
