  1. Key Idea: Square planar complexes of general formulae : $\left[M(a-a) b _2\right]$ and $[M(a-a)(b-b)]$ do not show geometrical isomerism. Whereas, an octahedral complex of general formula $\left[M(a-a) _2 b _2\right]$ can show geometrical (cis-trans) isomerism.

$\left[Pt(en) _2\left(Cl _2\right)\right]^{2+}$ with formula $\left[M(a-a) _2 b _2\right]$ will show geometrical isomerism as follows:
