Answer:

Correct Answer: 14. (a)

Solution:

  1. $Mn _2(CO) _{10}$ is an organometallic compound due to the presence of $Mn-C$ bond. The metal-carbon bond in organometallic compounds possess both $\sigma$ and $-\pi$ character. The $M-C$ $ \sigma$ bond is formed by the donation of lone pair of electrons from the carbonyl carbon into a vacant orbital of the metal. The $M-C$ $ \pi$-bond is formed by the donation of pair of electrons from a filled $d$-orbital of metal into vacant antibonding $\pi^{*}$ orbital of $CO$. The $M-L$ bonding creates a synergic effect which strengthens the bond between $CO$ and the metal.
