Organic Chemistry Basics - Result Question 131

83. Although phenoxide ion has more number of resonating structures than benzoate ion, benzoic acid is a stronger acid than phenol. Why?

(1997)

Show Answer

Solution:

In case of acetate ion, both the resonance structures are equivalent and negative charge always remains on electronegative oxygen. These factors make acetate ion more stable than phenoxide ion in which negative charge also moves on carbon atoms.
