Transition and InnerTransition Elements - Result Question 43
43. $\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}$ is reduced to $\mathrm{Fe}^{2+}$ by using
(2015 Adv.)
(a) $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_2$ in presence of NaOH
(b) $\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{O}_2$ in water
(c) $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_2$ in presence of $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$
(d) $\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{O}_2$ in presence of $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$
Show Answer
Answer:
Correct Answer: 43. (a,b)
Solution: $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_2$ is alkaline medium acts as reducing agent, reduces $\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}$ to $\mathrm{Fe}^{2+}$. In acidic medium the same $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_2$ oxidises $\mathrm{Fe}^{2+}$ to $\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}$.
