Transition and InnerTransition Elements - Result Question 64

65. A compound of vanadium has a magnetic moment of 1.73 BM. Work out the electronic configuration of the vanadium ion of the compound.

(1997)

Show Answer

Solution:

$\mu=\sqrt{n(n+2)} BM$ where ’ $n$ ’ is number of unpaired electrons.

$1.73=\sqrt{n(n+2)} \Rightarrow n=1 ; \mathrm{V}^{4+}=3 d^1$
