Carboxylic Acids and their Derivatives - Result Question 33-1
33. Compound $A$ of molecular formula $\mathrm{C}_9 \mathrm{H}_7 \mathrm{O}_2 \mathrm{Cl}$ exists in keto form and predominantly in enolic form $B$. On oxidation with $\mathrm{KMnO}_4, A$ gives $m$-chlorobenzoic acid. Identify $A$ and $B$.

Solution:
Compound $A$ of molecular formula $\mathrm{C}_9 \mathrm{H}_7 \mathrm{O}_2 \mathrm{Cl}$ exist in keto and predominantly in enolic form $B$. Hence, $A$ must be a carbonyl compound which contain $\alpha-\mathrm{H}$. Enolic forms of $B$ predominates because of presence of intramolecular H -bonding.
