Solution:

  1. Toluene undergoes oxidation with $KMnO _4$, forms benzoic acid. In this conversion, alkyl part of toluene converts into carboxylic group. Further, benzoic acid reacts with thionyl chloride $\left(SOCl _2\right)$ to give benzoyl chloride which upon reduction with $H _2 / Pd$ or $BaSO _4$ forms benzaldehyde (Rosenmund reduction) The conversion look like,
