Solution:
Phenol $(ArOH)$ is insoluble in dil. $HCl$ and readily soluble in $NaOH$ solution. It reacts with $Br _2$ /water to give $2,4 , 6$ -tribromophenol. It readily decolourises the yellow colour of $Br _2$ water. Reactions involved are as follows :
